FAQs

Matcha Vs Green Tea

People often can't tell the difference between green tea and matcha. In fact, matcha is a kind of green tea, and its value is different.

In Japanese, “cha” means “tea,” and “ma” means “powder”. Therefore, matcha literally translates to “powdered green tea”.The planting process of matcha is rigorous. It is planted in spring every year, and the green tea trees must be covered to avoid sunlight. The process results in matcha being less bitter.

After three weeks, the picked leaves are steamed and air-cooled to make tencha, which is what matcha before it is ground. The tencha will be slowly ground with a natural stone mill
under a specific temperature. A fine powder is produced, which is called matcha.

History of Matcha

The culture of matcha tea can be traced back to the 7th century in China. During this time period, tea leaves were steamed and formed into tea bricks for storage and trade.
The tea was prepared by roasting and pulverizing it before brewing the resulting powder in hot water with salt. The preparation of tea evolved over the centuries.

Many early Zen Buddhists made matcha an essential part of their lives due its sustained energy and calm alertness it provided. These Zen Buddhists then brought over the various ways of preparing matcha to Japan in 1191. Over time, matcha played a significant role in Japanese monasteries, and even became popular among the upper class starting in the 14th century. As matcha continued to soar in popularity, farmers needed to find a more efficient way of producing it. As a result, Sohen Nagatani developed the "Uji method", a new process of steam drying tea leaves, which revolutionized matcha production in 1738. Even today, farmers in Japan continue to perfect this process of developing and maximizing the benefits of matcha.
